A Trilogy of One Act One Person Plays

These plays are the creation and sole literary property of Patricia Horwood.  You may only perform these plays with my express permission.  These plays are for performing and you should perform them.  Just drop me an email to let me know your plans and I will contact you in return.

I was set a challenge to write some short plays that were essentially a monologue.  I fell in love with the medium and aim to develop this.  The versions you read here are the original ideas and "in development" mode so just a taster.  I found my plays aim to tell a story that touches you in some way.  Whether or not you agree, I would have failed if you remained indifferent.  When a subject takes my attention in such a way I can imagine writing a play or a story, I immediately want to expose its truth and discuss the topic.

The characters in these three plays are real people, that you know, are friends with, that walk on by.   These people are our invisible society, the ones it is too easy to ignore and shield our eyes from.  Maybe knowing and seeing people as they are, can give just a little fulfillment and meaning in our chaotic lives.  There is much to learn about the human condition and it is not all bad.

These plays are about those who have lived rich and sometimes painful lives; lives we can all empathise with.  A play about a middle aged woman with depression is not a soft option, nor to write about a black Captain in the British army with multicultural colleagues who is taken to his limit, nor to write about an old professor, retired and alone who has lost the love of his life.   The challenge here is to reveal truths we hide away in our society.   I could take the same topic and write five different plays on each.   Each of these three topics grabbed me.  I wanted to tell their stories in a way that gives grace and credence to the character being exposed.

I am not a director of plays, I am a teller of stories.  I have written the plays as I see them in my mind.  The BBC style scripted versions  are here in my office.  The versions you see have some editing and completion required, so it is just a flavour you are seeing.  A director will have the performers add their talent and wisdom to bring the plays to life.  An open mind is an open book, an open book is always worth reading.  There is always something to learn from someone else.
